Psychoeducational Assessments
My practice specializes in working with children, adolescents, teenagers, and young adults (typically ages 6 to 21) in the Ottawa area, providing comprehensive assessments to identify barriers impacting learning and overall well-being.
Psychoeducational assessments offer an in-depth understanding of each individual's unique strengths and challenges, delivering valuable insights into their specific learning profile. These assessments help clarify factors that may be affecting academic performance, attention, and emotional health.
Common concerns addressed include learning difficulties (such as challenges with reading, writing, math, memory, and information processing), attention and hyperactivity issues (including ADHD), and social/emotional concerns (such as anxiety and depression). Through evidence-based assessment and personalized recommendations, my goal is to support each client’s growth, confidence, and success.
Common Questions About Assessments
What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that helps us understand how an individual learns, thinks, and processes information. This assessment is useful for identifying conditions such as learning disabilities (including difficulties with reading, writing, or math), intellectual disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and other challenges that may affect learning and development. By highlighting both strengths and areas of difficulty, a psychoeducational assessment provides valuable insights into an individual’s unique learning profile.
Through standardized testing, observation, and input from parents, teachers, and the individual, the assessment clarifies factors that may impact academic performance or functioning at home. With this information, we can make targeted recommendations and provide supports to help each person reach their full potential in school and everyday life.
How will an Assessment Help my Child in School?
A psychoeducational assessment can be invaluable in understanding your child’s unique strengths and challenges related to learning. It helps pinpoint specific concerns, such as difficulties with reading, writing, math, attention, or social-emotional functioning, and guides the selection of appropriate interventions and supports. By providing a comprehensive evaluation, an assessment removes much of the guesswork from addressing learning challenges and helps ensure your child receives the resources they need to succeed.
These assessments are often a crucial step in helping children get back on track with their learning and access the support necessary for academic and personal growth.
What is the Cost?
Blue Door Psychological Services provides psychoeducational assessments with fees consistent with the standards of the Ontario College of Psychologists ($250 per billable hour). Most assessments require approximately 14 hours from initial intake to the final feedback session.
Payment Structure:
Clients pay half of the estimated assessment cost at the halfway point, and the remaining balance is due upon completion, following the feedback session. A detailed, comprehensive report is provided at the end of the process.
What’s Included in a Psychoeducational Assessment:
Intake Interview: Gathering background information and understanding your concerns
In-person Testing: Administration of standardized tests to evaluate cognitive, academic, and social-emotional functioning
Scoring and Interpretation: Careful analysis of test results
Comprehensive Report Writing: Preparation of a detailed report outlining findings, diagnoses (if applicable), and tailored recommendations
Feedback Meeting: Review of assessment results and discussion of next steps and supports
This thorough assessment process ensures accurate identification of learning and mental health challenges, and provides actionable recommendations to help your child succeed in school and daily life.
Does my Insurance Cover the Assessment Costs?
If you have health insurance, it is recommended to check with your provider regarding coverage for psychological or psychoeducational assessments. Some insurance plans may cover only a portion of the cost or have specific limits on reimbursement. In some cases, your insurance company may require a referral from your primary care physician or another healthcare professional before authorizing coverage.
Each client receives signed, detailed invoices for every billable hour, which can be submitted to your insurance provider for reimbursement. This ensures you have the necessary documentation to support your claim and maximize your benefits.
How do we Prepare for the Assessment?
There is no single way to prepare for a psychoeducational assessment. The most important step is ensuring your child feels comfortable and gets a good night's rest before testing.
To help your child feel at ease, briefly explain that the assessment will involve engaging activities such as puzzles, drawing, and answering questions. Encourage your child to bring a favorite toy, comfort item (like a teddy bear), and a snack for breaks. Every effort is made to create a welcoming environment, and most children find the assessment enjoyable and leave feeling positive about the experience.

Is an Autism Evaluation Part of the Assessment?
Psychoeducational and Psychological assessments include a comprehensive look at a wide range of social-emotional, developmental and behavioural concerns. The assessments do include an examination of autism-related concerns and provides a holistic view of an individual's functioning across cognitive, academic, social, emotional, and behavioral domains. When autism is a specific concern, the assessment process may involve additional testing to thoroughly explore these issues. In more complex cases, you may be referred to specialized services for further evaluation and support.
